Tulsa River Tax Post Mortem: The Worst Run Campaign Ever?

Observers are still shaking their heads over Tulsa County voters deciding Tuesday against a seven-year sales tax hike to fund $282 million in river enhancements. A poorly-funded grassroots effort defeated a well-financed campaign despite private pledges of $117 million dollars should the tax plan pass.

The inept and impotent campaign was directed by embattled Speaker Lance Cargill's chief adviser Fount Holland. In addition to Holland, news reports indicate that up to five PR firms were employed. One of the highest profile PR firms, Tulsa-based Schnake Turnbo, had several members prominently spinning in the media. News reports indicated the pro-tax side spent over $1 million in attempt to win the day.

"This is one of the worst run campaigns in the history of Oklahoma politics," one knowledgeable insider told OKPNS. "Holland is known for charging Tiffany prices for mediocre, boiler-plate work, and the Schnake Turnbo Frank firm is just awful at politics. They should stick to shopping center openings. It's terrible that Tulsa has missed such a great opportunity due to the fact that their leadership let hacks screw the whole thing up." The Oklahoma Political News Service will continue to investigate.

River Tax Fails

The final results were 47.5% of the voters said “yes”, 52.5% said “no”.

Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor called the River Tax vote a defining moment in Tulsa history.
