Daily Kos: The Crazy Radical Andrew Rice"

Gasp. The Oklahoma Republican Party has just blown this race away by exposing State Sen. Andew Rice's (D) connection to the most radical of radical organizations. The most leftest of leftist groups. We're talking shit so far out of the mainstream, that I have the vapors just thinking about it.

What groups can these be? Well, please sit down before you click over to see. It's groups like:

Sierra Club ("Global warming alarmists")
Twenty-First Century Democrats ("ultra-liberal [...] leaders from Planned Parenthood and labor unions")
ACLU ("Civil Libertarians")
MoveOn ("Betrayus")
Some group called "Hollywood" ("Jeanine Garofalo")
Democracy for America ("They share the same values and vision as Howard Dean")
Stonewall Democrats ("Gay agenda")
The Communist Party (he is a Democrat, after all)

And don't get me started on the Progressive Alliance Foundation. "Rice founded The Progressive Alliance Foundation. Its goal is to convince Oklahomans that anti-war, pro-gay liberal values are actually our values. The group’s slogan is "Progressive Values, Mainstream Values, Oklahoma Values."

Imagine the horror! Damn it -- Oklahoma values are all about war mongering and gay-bashing! You know, good, and wholesome values like that!

But there's more! Read more...

Getting LOST

by Senator Jim Inhofe

What if I were to tell you that at this very moment in the halls of the Senate, legislation is being considered that will govern 70 percent of the earth's surface, threaten the very sovereignty of our country and, worse, without the efforts of a select few, would have become law years ago? What if I added that our enemies are waiting in the wings for us to make this historic blunder by accepting legislation that effectively cedes our autonomy to international organizations such as the United Nations?

If you are of the small percentage of Americans who has heard of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, or simply the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), I congratulate you on being ahead of the curve. If you have not heard of LOST, you soon will, as we are gearing up in the Senate for a fight against one of the most far-reaching international challenges to American sovereignty we have ever faced.

LOST was conceived in the late 1970s as a way of governing all activities that occur on and beneath the surface of the world's oceans. The treaty's central aims, those of defining the corridors of water surrounding a country and standardizing the rules of navigation through these corridors, are innocent enough and are probably needed to govern and safeguard the ever-increasing use of the high seas.

H.R. 2003: Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007

The following letter was sent to Sen. Inhofe by the Ethiopian American Civic Advocacy (EACA) organization.

Dear Honorable Senator Jim Inhofe:

We are grateful for your passionate commitment to alleviating poverty, promoting human rights and good governance in Africa specifically in Ethiopia, as you eloquently stated in your recent speech to the United States Senate. However, we are writing to you to express our deep disappointment about your statement on the Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability bill (H.R.2003) which was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives. In particular, we are concerned that your statement on H.R.2003 appears to be based on distorted information that may have been provided to you, and reflects a lack of accurate data from independent sources on developments in Ethiopia

Ethiopia's political and social environment has been deteriorating at an alarming rate over the last few years. The ongoing systematic repression and the unspeakable crimes against civilians by the dictatorial government, which are too long to list in this letter but are carefully documented in multiple reputable sources, including the recent U.S. State Department country report on human rights, will, if not condemned and stemmed, ultimately make pockets within the country a breeding ground for terrorism. The unchecked and hardline government repression will increase the number of Ethiopians who choose to take up or support armed struggle against injustice in all parts of the country, for lack of any hope that the international community would take action against the atrocities committed by the government. Historically, Ethiopians have been a peaceful and staunchly pro-American society. The US must not turn against the people of Ethiopia by siding with a repressive regime that does not respect the dignity of its citizens, as this would be counterproductive and aggravate the currently prevailing instability. Our U.S. national interest will be sustainably protected and secured if our US government continues to stand with the 78 million Ethiopians, who in May of 2005 stood at the polling station for hours to cast their ballot and choose liberty over tyranny rather than live under a dictatorship that is skillful in maintaining a façade of democratic appearances.

During your speech on the United States Senate floor you stated: Read more...

Inhofe Condemns HR 2003 "The Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability of 2007"

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today made the following statement criticizing legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last week titled “The Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007” (H.R. 2003):

“Though this legislation states that its purpose is to ‘encourage and facilitate the consolidation of peace and security’ in Ethiopia, in reality it focuses only on shortcomings while blatantly ignoring the unprecedented progress the country has made,” Senator Inhofe said. “Ethiopia takes great pride in being the oldest independent country in Africa. They continue to be a close friend of the United States and a strong ally in the War on Terror in the Horn of Africa.

Quote of the Day

"As a U.S. Senator who constantly portrays himself as a pro-national security public servant, Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe is now choosing to ignore the pleas of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of the Navy, among other military leaders, when they ask for Senate approval of UNCLOS. American military leaders have made it clear that participation in UNCLOS will enhance our national security and that changes have been made in UNCLOS provisions to explicitly protect American interests. And yet Jim Inhofe and a very small minority are working against our nation's best interests, simply because it might hurt the special interests he puts before the needs of Oklahomans again and again. Inhofe is clearly out of step with our national security needs." Sen. Andrew Rice

How can an anti-war, pro gay pacifist say with a straight (no pun intended) face, that Sen. Inhofe is "out of step with our national security needs?" Incredible! From Rice's campaign website:

"Congress should force the President to implement an orderly redeployment of American troops from the Civil War in Iraq and adequately finance their health and well-being as they return home."

"Once the Iraq Civil War is no longer draining American lives and treasure, the U.S. can refocus our might and skill on identifying and destroying terrorist cells around the world. Just 18 days before the start of the Iraq War, America enjoyed one of our greatest successes since 9/11 when our intelligence forces cooperated with Pakistani intelligence to capture Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. Rather than refereeing a civil war, this surgical raid in a Pakistani village 4 ½ years ago serves as an example of American strength against terror."

Senator Inhofe and Congressman Sullivan Endorse Fred Thompson for President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CONTACT: Jeff Sadosky

October 10, 2007
571-730-1010

McLean, VA - In another sign of Thompson's growing momentum, Senator Jim Inhofe and Congressman John Sullivan of Oklahoma today endorsed Fred Thompson for President of the United States. These endorsements today further strengthen the campaign's organization and standing in Oklahoma, a key early primary state on February 5th.

Fred Thompson stated: "I am so honored that my good friend Jim Inhofe is joining my team. We worked closely together in the United States Senate fighting for conservative principles such as lower taxes, smaller government, and a strong military. With his help, we will take our conservative message and agenda all the way from the campaign trail to the White House.

"I am also honored to have the endorsement today of Rep. John Sullivan from Oklahoma's First Congressional District. Like me, John has been a strong advocate for lower taxes and limited government, and I look forward to working closely with him in the coming months as we take our shared conservative principles directly to the American people."

Senator Jim Inhofe stated: "Even before he officially announced, I came out in support of Fred because of his tremendous experience, his leadership, and his proven record in support of conservative values. As Americans get to know Fred over the next few months, they will quickly find a man committed to winning the War on Terror and ready to finally secure our borders. They will find a man of experience who helped bring change to Congress as part of the 1994 conservative revolution. And finally, they will find, as I have, a man of deep character and principle, ready to take on the tremendous challenges facing our country today."

Congressman John Sullivan stated: "I am proud to support Senator Thompson. He is a backer of fiscally responsible spending, positive immigration reform and correcting our nation's broken health care system."

James Inhofe was first elected to the United States Senate in 1994 and was subsequently re-elected in 1996 and again in 2002. While in the Senate, Sen. Inhofe has been a strong advocate for principles of limited government and lower taxes. As the second ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Inhofe has also gained a reputation as an expert on defense and national security issues. Prior to being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994, Sen. Inhofe was a congressman from Oklahoma's First Congressional District, mayor of Tulsa, minority leader of the Oklahoma Senate, and a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

John Sullivan was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2002 to represent Oklahoma's First Congressional District. Congressman John Sullivan is a fourth generation Oklahoman, and during his time in Congress he has been a strong advocate for less government, fiscal restraint, and lower taxes. Congressman Sullivan has also been influential in the area of immigration and increasing border security. Prior to being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Sullivan worked as a small businessman in Tulsa in the fields of energy, transportation, real estate and investments.

Senator Inhofe Makes Dirty Dozen List

The League of Conservation has named Senator Inhofe one of the "Dirty Dozen" for his opposition to Global Warming. Senator Inhofe calls Global Warming for what it is, a hoax and a money making scheme.

“When you’re on the Dirty Dozen, that means you’re out of step with voters,” said Tony Massaro, senior vice president with the league. “(Inhofe) is one of the leading global warming deniers still left on planet earth, and there aren’t many of them.”

I would like to let Senator Inhofe know that there are some Oklahomans and some Americans that don't believe the hype as it relates to Global Warming.

Paging Candidate Rice...

State Senator Andrew Rice, the only announced Democrat opponent to U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe’s 2008 reelection has gone completely silent as of late. The pro-choice, liberal Democrat has promised to run an open and transparent campaign, leading us to believe either he isn’t staying true to his pledge, or his campaign is just adrift.

For example, a brief glance at Rice’s campaign website reveals:

  • Rice’s campaign blog hasn’t been updated since the September 19.
  • Rice’s campaign hasn’t produced an original press release since September 11, opting instead to use recycled newspaper stories and Oklahoma Democratic Party releases as filler content.
  • Rice’s media page features one stale video from a fundraiser and pictures that haven’t been updated since his September 5 announcement.

Has neophyte Rice already lost his steam? Is his team incapable of fighting on all fronts? Or is Rice simply not running the open and transparent campaign he promised?

In fact, conspicuously missing from the Rice “Upcoming Events” calendar is a joint Andrew Rice/Jim Roth fundraiser taking place in Oklahoma City on October 11.

Only time will tell if Rice has given up on transparency, or if his campaign has simply become stagnant.

Inhofe Statement on SCHIP Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today announced that he is a co-sponsor along with Senators Lott (R-Miss.) and Coburn (R-Okla.), among others, of the SCHIP Extension Act of 2007 (S.2086), which provides an 18-month clean extension of the SCHIP program without the big-government expansions in the Democrats’ SCHIP re-authorization legislation (H.R.976). The temporary extension is consistent with the President’s plan and increases funding in accordance with CBO estimates of the costs to ensure that every state’s SCHIP program is fully funded when the current program’s authorization ends on September 30th.

“I support the original intent of the SCHIP program, which provides health coverage for uninsured children in need,” Senator Inhofe said. “Unfortunately, Congressional Democrats have been playing politics with the SCHIP re-authorization bill, using it as a vehicle to advance their long-standing agenda of socializing healthcare and creating a new middle-class entitlement.

“The Democrats’ legislation unnecessarily expands state-wide health insurance coverage from low-income, uninsured children to include entitlements to some upper-middle class families and adults, forcing the federal government to insure adults with funds intended for children. Furthermore, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that almost 2.1 million people eligible in this new bracket could drop private coverage in favor of government-run, taxpayer-funded insurance. This unprecedented expansion toward nationalized healthcare will detrimentally affect the quality of coverage available to Americans.

“Congress needs to pass a clean extension of SCHIP that maintains the original intent of the program by providing health insurance for the millions of uninsured, low-income children across the country, not middle-class adults. I co-sponsored the SCHIP Extension Act to do just that – provide an 18-month extension of the SCHIP program, ensuring that children are still able to receive health insurance when the program expires this week.”

Press One for English? No Call Your Senators for English!

Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.) has introduced a bill that would make English the official language of the United States of America, and would require “The Government of the United States [to] conduct its official business in English, including publications, income tax forms, and informational materials.” It would also send a message to new immigrants that the U.S. intends to preserve its linguistic unity as a nation, and that they must have a responsibility to learn English as the first step toward pursing the American dream, and full participation in American life.

Race bodes well for state

As ugly and quarrelsome as political races can be, the electorate profits from them, and that certainly will be the case in the race for U.S. Senate in 2008 in Oklahoma.

Incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe will defend his seat against at least one candidate, and the race is sure to be filled with fire.

While Inhofe’s conservative value system reflects the value system of most Oklahomans, Inhofe’s long tenure has been filled with controversy.

As it currently stands with the amount verbally committed from the private sector, Sen Inhofe does not support the Tulsa River Tax."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla..) today praised the passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag. Global Warming Hypocrisy

Thank God for a man with courage! Senator Inhofe speaking before the Tulsa Press Club while a "Polar bear" raises its hand to whine about Global Warming. What is so ironic, Liberals talk about saving the polar bears but thought that Knut should have died. His public face here in the state is “Andrew for Oklahoma,” but when he’s courting contributions on ultraliberal blog DailyKos, is there any question as to what Andrew is running for? It isn’t about Oklahoma at all, it’s about being “against Inhofe.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe today made the following statement on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ resignation:

“While Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and I have disagreed on a few matters, including making English the national language of the United States, I appreciate his service to the country and wish him and his family the best in their future,” Senator Inhofe said. “Though he is a man of strong character and has served faithfully at the behest of the President, Alberto Gonzales’ effectiveness as Attorney General has been compromised by intense partisanship and the ongoing controversy surrounding the firing of the U.S. attorneys.”

Does Bush Listen to GOP Lawmakers on Vetoes?

By John Gizzi

One case in point that was cited to me was the President’s veto of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which is an authorization rather than a spending measure. In taking the action he did, the President did not talk to Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe (Okla.), former chairman of the Senate Environment Committee and now its ranking Republican.

Mr. Bush’s apparent refusal to talk to Inhofe before the veto was something I brought up at yesterday’s press briefing at the White House. I also asked Press Secretary Tony Snow whether the President consults with ranking Members of any Senate committees before he issues a veto.

“Well, how do you know he didn't consult Senator Inhofe?” Snow retorted.

I replied: "Senator Inhofe told me.” Read more...

Inhofe Praises Tim Degiusti's Senate Confirmation

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today made the following statement praising the Senate confirmation of Tim DeGiusti to be the district judge for the Western District of Oklahoma:

“I am pleased to announce that in the final moments before the Senate adjourned for August recess, Tim DeGiusti was confirmed as U.S. federal district court judge for the Western District of Oklahoma,” Senator Inhofe said. “Tim DeGiusti has led a life of excellence and is no stranger to public service. He is a native Oklahoman and has served his country as trial counsel for the United States Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps and in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserves as a military lawyer.

“His resume demonstrates a wide range of legal experience including commercial litigation, business torts, military law, tribal court litigation and employment law. He was listed among the ‘Best Lawyers in America’ in 2007 and has received the American Bar Association’s highest rating of ‘well-qualified’. I have every expectation that Tim DeGiusti will be a first-rate federal judge and will serve our nation and Oklahoma well.”

Inhofe Praises Immigration Bill’s Defeat

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today lauded the defeat of the 2007 Immigration Reform bill (S.1639) after a fourth cloture vote failed to pass the Senate:

“Today’s defeat of the Senate Immigration Bill is a victory for the American people, the integrity of our borders and the rule of law. For the past several weeks, a small cadre of Senators have manipulated the traditional legislative processes, strangled debate, and prevented the introduction of worthwhile amendments. In doing so, they turned a deaf ear to the will of the American people and the overwhelming sentiment of their constituents.

“Thankfully, Americans of all stripes weighed in on this issue, influencing Congressional opinions and helping to once again defeat this bill.

“Despite its proponents’ claims to the contrary, the Senate immigration legislation was fatally flawed from day one. Since its inception, this legislation has failed to address the key issues of concern for almost all Americans: the enhancement of border security and the enforcement of current immigration laws.

“From the beginning of this debate, I have stated that I would vehemently oppose any immigration legislation that guarantees amnesty for illegal immigrants, unfairly burdens taxpayers or fails to secure our borders. In the wake of this latest vote against amnesty, I sincerely hope the Senate will now turn its attention and efforts toward meaningful immigration reform. It is clear that in the future we must deal with the issue of illegal immigration by focusing first on securing our borders - without a path to amnesty.”

Inhofe Statement on Immigration Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) made the following statement in response to today’s vote to invoke cloture on the 2007 Immigration Reform Bill which passed 64-35:

“I am very disappointed in the outcome of today’s vote. A vote for this motion to invoke cloture is just one step closer to a vote for amnesty. Thirty hours of debate and a limited amount of amendments will not change the underlying nature of this bill. I have long said that I will not support any measure that allows illegal immigrants to shortcut the current path to citizenship and I will continue to fight to expose the flaws in this bill, helping to defeat this egregious gift of amnesty to 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants.

“It’s time for the Senate to listen to their constituents. The American public does not want this so-called immigration fix. What they want and what they deserve is for the federal government to secure the borders and enforce the rule of law – both of which can be achieved without an additional 800 pages of new legislation.”

NRSC Starts New Website: "The Cost Of Democrats.Com"

There is a perception (and it's correct) that the left has been far more effective at harnessing the power of the Internet for grassroots organizing and fundraising. They've even coined a new phrase for their activists calling them the "netroots." The technology gap was even more evident after the first quarter fundraising reports were released. Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama raised tremendous sums on the Internet, but that wasn't the underlying story. The story was that Clinton had amassed 50,000 + contributors while Obama doubled her amount with over 100,000. As has been widely reported, Obama's contributors gave in small amounts, which makes them eligible to keep giving and giving until they reach campaign finance limits.

We received an email recently from the National Republican Senatorial Committee that suggests the Republican Party - specifically the Senatorial Committee -is making a serious effort to close that gap and compete with the Democrats on the Internet. We've learned the committee has an "e-press secretary" that monitors the blogs, and, they've started a new site called "Cost of Democats.com" The site claims that in the first 100 days of Democratic Senate control, they have passed a "$700 billion dollar tax increase." According to the site, that would equate to an extra 2,500 on the average Oklahoman. There are other features on the site including videos and links to other blogs. The RNC has a lot of ground to make up, but this is an encouraging start.

Letter From Sen. Inhofe

Hat tip: Oklahoma Opinions

We reported to you last week that Sen. Inhofe was starting an online petition for Americans to voice their displeasure at the resurrection of the "Shamesty Bill" in the Senate. The above map shows the response so far. Below is a letter from Sen. Inhofe:

Word is already spreading around Washington about our efforts to stop this immigration bill, and every day we're closer to victory. It is my hope I can write to you a week or two from now to celebrate the defeat of this bill and a renewed focus on border security and the enforcement of exiting immigration laws.

In addition to sharing the good news, I'm writing to you today for two reasons:

Our work isn't done yet. There is plenty of time for more 'closed-door' deals and the pressure on undecided Senators right now is incredible. Let's keep building on the early success of the petition by inviting five friends to join us in signing it. Click here to use our Forward to a Friend page. We've provided the invitation text; all you need to do is provide email addresses.

I also want to share with you a new Secure Borders Now Blog that will keep you informed on the latest immigration bill details. I'll keep track of all upcoming votes, speeches and news, and shine a light on the bill's progress through the Senate. I'm specifically sharing the link with folks who have signed the petition because I want you to help spread the word and keep our citizens up to date with the latest information. Click here to read the Secure Borders Now Blog.
Thank you again for your help in making the petition a tremendous success in such a short period of time. The word is getting out through your e-mails, word of mouth, in blogs, and in forums. It's humbling to be reminded in such a powerful way that elected officials are responsible to those who elected us. I'm proud to be able to serve Oklahomans and so many Americans across the country on this issue in the U.S. Senate.

Best wishes,

Jim Inhofe

Global Warming Gets Religion

By Amanda Carpenter

Once she wrested control of the Senate’s Environmental and Public Works Committee from conservative stalwart Sen. Jim Inhofe (R.-Okla.), Sen. Barbara Boxer (D.-Calif.) was expected to aggressively pursue legislation to combat global warming. What wasn’t expected was that she would do it with blessings from the Church.
Last Thursday, Boxer held a hearing that highlighted the growing role of religion in liberal political campaigns--particularly in the name of “environmental justice.” There, a coalition of 35 religious denominations called for an 80 percent reduction in global warming emissions by the year 2050, and bill S.309, sponsored by Boxer and avowed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I.-Vt.), calls for the same.

Sen. Inhofe, the ranking member of the committee, said using religious leaders to advocate for government intervention against global warming was a new technique Democrats were using to “divide and conquer the evangelical community and get people away from core values issues.”

Draft Brad Henry for U.S. Senate?

The anonymous Dem4ever - or most likely a Henry staffer - wrote on the Swing State Project blog over the weekend that they have started a "Draft Brad Henry" website to convince Henry to take on conservative Senator Jim Inhofe next year. Dem4ever has proclaimed Inhofe as the "worst Senator around right now" and an "embarrassment" to Oklahoma.

Excuse us, but Gene Stipe, Jeff McMahan, Drew Edmondson, and Carrol Fisher- to name a few- are role models for our kids? We warn you to put your coffee down while you read this so you don't spit it all over your computer. Funny!

"I do not want my state to suffer under another six years of embarrassment. We do have plenty of Democrats that could give Inhofe a run for his money. Our Attorney General, Drew Edmondson, would definitely make for a strong candidate."
"Not only is Henry one of our state's most popular Democratic politicians, he has also been a solid governor. Frank Keating, his wingnut Republican predecessor, ran one of the worst, if not the worst, budget deficits in state history. Put simply, our state was a total mess. Henry amazingly turned this deficit into a surplus without massive cuts to education and health care." (I'm sure $70 a barrel oil helped) Read more

Inhofe Spokesman Disputes High Courts Ruling of (CO2) as a "Pollutant"

(CNSNews.com) - Global warming skeptics reacted strongly Monday to a Supreme Court ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency has the power to regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from cars, calling the decision "bad news" for the country and predicting that the economic fallout will be "vast."

In the first case of its kind to reach the high court, the Supreme Court ruled that the Clean Air Act gives the EPA the power to regulate greenhouse gases and that the agency has "no reasoned explanation" for not doing so.

"Because greenhouse gases fit well within the Clean Air Act's capacious definition of 'air pollutant' we hold that EPA has the statutory authority to regulate the emission of such gases from new motor vehicles," the court said.

"While we are still reviewing the case for its regulatory implications, having the authority to regulate C02 as a pollutant and justifying that authority are two different things," Marc Morano, spokesman for Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, told Cybercast News Service.

"CO2 is not an air pollutant and should not be treated as one," Morano added. Read more...

Tulsa World a "Republican Outfit"

Below is a quote from Daily Kos, the most popular and influential left wing blog on the Internet. The site averages over half a million hits a day. Today they gave their assessment of the Democrats chances of picking up additional Senate Seats in '08. Senator Inhofe's re-election is in the "could get interesting" category.

"Races that are or might be interesting by Election Day 2008. The first thing that surprises is that out of 33 races this cycle, a full 20 have the potential of turning into real races. Given that 14 of those are Republicans, it's a great map for Democrats.

If ridiculously popular Gov. Brad Henry runs, this is a race....2010 presents a better chance for him when crazy Tom Coburn faces his first reelection battle. A January Tulsa World poll (essentially a Republican outfit) gave Inhofe ratings of 56/27, and George Bush 47/47."
The Tulsa World a "Republican outfit?" PLEASE!!

Inhofe Vows to Put Brakes on Gore’s ‘Live Earth’ Concert at the Capitol

By Elana Schor

Fresh from his face-to-face tussle with former Vice President Al Gore, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) is vowing to stall Gore’s hotly anticipated Capitol concert to draw attention to global warming.

Inhofe’s belief that climate change is “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people” is common knowledge in the capitol, and environmental groups cheered the new prospects for carbon-capping legislation when he ceded the Environment and Public Works Committee gavel this session. But Inhofe’s parliamentary powers can block indefinitely the resolution that would permit Gore to choose the capitol’s West Front for the U.S. leg of his seven-continent Live Earth concert tour — a collaboration between Gore and promoter Kevin Wall, who masterminded previous blockbuster charity concerts Live Aid and Live 8.

“There has never been a partisan political event at the Capitol, and this is a partisan political event,” Inhofe said yesterday. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) attempted late last week to pass the authorizing measure for Live Earth by unanimous consent. But Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) raised an objection on the floor, seeking more time for his side to look at the resolution.

Inhofe appeared to see little room for an accommodation that could allow the concert to go forward. “There’s no compromise. Either we change the rules or we don’t.” Read more

Long Standing Inhofe Amendment to Limit Spending Included in Budget

Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla) claimed victory Friday in his continued battle against rampant federal spending. For three years, Inhofe has proposed a simple, one sentence amendment to the annual Congressional Budget Resolution requiring a supermajority (3/5) vote to exceed the previous fiscal year’s non-defense, non-trust-fund, discretionary spending.

After years of effort, Inhofe’s language was incorporated into the fiscal year 2008 Congressional Budget Resolution (S.Con.Res.21) that passed the Senate by a 52-47 vote. Due to increased pressure for fiscal responsibility in Washington, Congress proactively included Inhofe’s language.

“The Democrats have once again lived up to their ‘tax and spend’ reputation,” Inhofe said. “My language will help to protect our nation from future irresponsible spending binges.”

Inhofe’s language saves taxpayers a projected $9 billion in this year’s budget alone. By comparison, the entire fiscal year 2008 Oklahoma state budget, as passed by state House and Senate, is just over $7 billion.

“Though the Democrats’ budget includes essential items that I fought to preserve including essential funding for BRAC and my fiscally conservative language, I cannot support this legislation because of the unnecessary over-spending it contains.” Inhofe said. “In addition to hiking spending by more than $150 billion, the Democrats’ budget calls for a $736 billion tax increase that will ultimately have devastating effects on our economy. Their budget also fails to address entitlement reform, leaving Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on a path to bankruptcy.”

Sen. Inhofe Judged Most Conservative; Rep. Boren Most Liberal in National Journal Rankings

Among Oklahoma’s congressional delegation, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe was judged the most conservative, and U.S. Rep. Dan Boren the most liberal. However Boren, the state’s lone Democratic representative, was ranked the most conservative Democratic member of the House of Representatives (with a slightly higher composite conservative score than liberal score). Boren’s voting record also rated more conservative than 11 GOP members for 2006.

In the U.S. Senate, Jim Inhofe was ranked eighth most conservative, with a composite conservative score of 89.3. Tom Coburn was ranked eighteenth most conservative, with a composite conservative score of 78.8. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) was ranked the senate’s most liberal member, with a composite conservative score of 4.8. Durbin was followed closely by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who garnered a composite conservative score of 5.

Among Oklahoma’s House members, Tulsa Congressman John Sullivan was ranked the state’s most conservative congressman and 27th most conservative member of the House, with a composite conservative score of 87.7. As for the rest of the Oklahoma House delegation, here’s how they lined up, from conservative to liberal: Sullivan, Ernest Istook (38th most conservative, composite conservative score of 86.3); Frank Lucas (42nd most conservative, composite conservative score of 85.3), Tom Cole (96th most conservative, composite conservative score of 78.7); and Dan Boren (219th most conservative, composite conservative score of 50.8).

The rankings are based on 103 House votes and 82 Senate votes in 2006, on economic, social and foreign policy. The composite conservative score means that the member voted more conservative than that percentage of his or her colleagues. A score of 85 on the conservative scale, for example, means that the senator was more conservative than 85% of his or her Senate colleagues on key votes during 2006.

Inhofe Honored With Taxpayers’ Friend Award

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today received the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” from the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) for his continued efforts to protect and support the taxpayers of Oklahoma and the nation. Sen. Inhofe was ranked 4th among senators and was the highest ranked member of the Oklahoma congressional delegation for the year 2006 for his commitment to reducing federal spending, taxes, and debt. Sen. Inhofe was one of only 61 members in both the House and the Senate to receive the NTU’s "Taxpayers’ Friend” award this year.

“I wish to thank the National Taxpayers Union for this award,” Inhofe said. “No other group in America needs more support and representation than the American taxpayer, and the National Taxpayers Union continues to provide an invaluable service. I look forward to continuing to work for lower taxes, a strong economy, and keeping the federal budget out of the family budget.”
John Berthoud, President of the National Taxpayers Union, stated, "While many Members of Congress talk about reducing the size of government, Senator Inhofe backed up those words with votes. His pro-taxpayer score is one of the best in the entire Senate, and proves that he is a consistent and effective ally in the battle to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington.

Jones Announces Bid for GOP Chairman

Yesterday, after weeks of speculation he would mount a primary challenge against Oklahoma’s senior US Senator Jim Inhofe, former ousted state party chairman and failed Republican nominee for State Auditor Gary Jones has set sights on his old job instead: chairman of the state Republican Party.

According to Jones: “[D]uring [my] first tenure as GOP State Chairman, Republican registration grew four percent statewide and Republicans picked up 12 legislative seats, numerous courthouse offices and reelected a United States Senator.”

In truth, Jones did not reelect a U.S. Senator. Tom Coburn was elected for the first time. More interesting, however, Jones focuses his attention in his press release on 2010, and fails to mention Republicans’ need to re-elect Jim Inhofe in 2008, despite the possibility of a challenge by Gov. Brad Henry. “If I am elected, I intend to devote my full time and energies to building a party that elects a Governor…” Jones said, apparently dismissing the current election cycle. Could it be that his widely known and long standing feud with Senator Inhofe is already shining through?

However, we noted with interest that Jones announced his qualifications by copying, nearly verbatim, from Tulsa County Republican Chairman and current frontrunner for state chairman Jerry Buchanan’s announcement letter. “Republicans have my pledge that I will work tirelessly to make certain we have the people, money and state of the art technology necessary to win,” Jones wrote in his press release.

In the Buchanan announcement, “communications, fundraising, grassroots outreach, and political technology” were the key focal points of his campaign for chairman.

With both Buchanan and Jones in the race, it remains unclear whether current chairman, Tom Daxon, will seek reelection after what many Republicans considered dismal statewide election results in November.

OKPNS welcomes readers’ reaction to Jones’s announcement, either in the comments section found beneath each article, or through our anonymous tipline.

Inhofe Bill Requires Parental Consent for Head Start Physical Exams

U.S. Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.) yesterday praised the inclusion of his legislation requiring parental consent for non-emergency intrusive physical examinations in the Head Start Reauthorization Act of 2007 (S.556). Sen. Inhofe has introduced his legislation (S.174) to amend the Head Start Act in the 108th, 109th, and 110th Congresses.

“Young children attending Head Start programs should not be subjected to these intrusive physical exams without prior knowledge and consent of their parents,” Inhofe said. “As a father and a grandfather, I believe it is vital for parents to be informed about what is happening to their children in the classroom. I am pleased that after my continued efforts there will finally be definitive language in federal law prohibiting these exams without parental consent.”

Senator Inhofe first introduced this legislation when several constituents raised concerns about their children receiving intrusive exams without their consent. While the Department of Health and Human Services administered general exam guidelines to agencies, the U.S. Code is not clear about prohibiting them without parental consent, thus leading to the problem the parents encountered.

Below is an excerpt from the Tulsa case that motivated Sen. Inhofe to sponsor this legislation:

Dubbs v Head Start Inc.

In this civil rights action, parents of eight pre-school children enrolled in the Head Start program in Tulsa, Oklahoma, complain that their children were subjected to intrusive physical examinations, including genital examinations and blood tests, on school premises without parental notice or consent. They claim that the Head Start agency, defendant Tulsa Community Action Project, falsely represented to medical personnel that consent forms had been obtained for each of the children and insisted on examinations even for children with up-to-date physicals supplied by their own doctors. They claim that these examinations violated their rights under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and under state law.

On November 5, 1998, Peggy Terry, a registered nurse and a CAP employee, entered a classroom of pre-school children participating in the Head Start program at Roosevelt Elementary in Tulsa. She announced that the children were to be taken to a another classroom in the building for physical examinations. One parent, Misti Dubbs, who was employed as an aide in the Head Start program, protested that CAP had not obtained consent for the examinations and that many of the families had already turned in physical examination reports from their own doctors. When nurse Terry insisted on examinations for all the children, Mrs. Dubbs approached a KD supervisor who in turn consulted the supervisor of employees at KD's Roosevelt site. Neither of these supervisors intervened.

CAP had previously told the County Health Department that CAP would obtain the requisite consent from parents prior to the medical examinations. Relying on that representation, the Health Department conveyed this information to nurses Strayhorn and Baker. On November 5, Strayhorn and Baker arrived at Roosevelt before the appointed time for the exams and queried the CAP Head Start representative, Peggy Terry, about whether the children's parents had completed consent forms. Strayhorn and Baker looked for consent forms in the students' file folders and found none. The nurses raised concerns about the absence of consent forms with nurse Terry, but Terry assured them that CAP had previously obtained consent and that the proper forms were on file. Strayhorn and Baker relied on that information and proceeded with the exams.

The central question in this case is whether CAP and the other defendants had a reasonable basis for believing that the parents had consented to the examinations.

In a series of orders, the district court disposed of all claims against all defendants, either on dismissal for failure to state a claim on which relief may be granted or on summary judgment. The district court then ordered the plaintiffs to pay the costs of the litigation.

Jones Denies He'll Challenge Sen. Inhofe

Gary Jones recently sent this email to OKPNS:

I have no plans to run against Jim Inhofe and anyone claiming that must have alterior (sic) motives to be making these claims.

I fully accept my loss in the last election as my responsibility. I ran in a year that the political environment did not favor Republicans in Oklahoma or anywhere in the U.S. I along with about three other statewide GOP candidates came close even in that environment.

I made a decision to put personal money into my race along with others like Todd Hiett who put in $200,000 and Howard Barnett who put in over a million himself. This was a decision I made because I felt as State Auditor I could clean up corruption and expose waste. I came close but was not successful. I borrowed about half that and will pay it back just like I did last time I ran.

I have commercial real estate interest and also a cattle operation that has provided us more income than what I recieved when I served as GOP Chairman. Taking that much out of our finances while campaigning full time can put a toll on cash flow, but I will have the debts paid back in a short time frame.

Obviously someone has a problem with me and choses to hide behind your website to make these claims. I have no problem discussing any of these items openly and honestly.

Gary Jones
