Tipline: “Write a Caption For This!”

Mike Turpen picture courtesy of the “Inside the Beltway” blog.

We love it when our readers give us suggestions for stories. A reader today did even better, they gave us a suggestion and wrote us copy to boot. We invite our readers to leave their own caption for this photo.

“Using the wads of cash his buddy WAD Edmondson gave him for doing virtually nothing in the phony tobacco lawsuit scam, Mike Turpen has bought his way into favor with the white wine sipping crowd in Oklahoma City.

The liberal brown nosing plaintiff’s lawyer, an enemy of the 1st Amendment, stopped his pursuit of frivolous lawsuits and tanking his formerly-respectable television show long enough to frighten readers of the city paper. Pucker up, buttercup!”

Drive-by Orgy Underway/Press Corps Needs a Cigarette

OKPNS has been aware for some time now that anti-Randy Terrill forces were peddling some negative spin regarding a personal bankruptcy filing in 2005. The story broke on a Democrat bulletin board, and that was good enough for drive-by bloggers and print reporters to immediately began the super-heated pursuit.

As any regular reader of this blog knows, we are often critical of the Oklahoma press, specifically the capitol press, for their zealous prosecution of a case when the targets are conservatives, and their indolent and lazy attitude toward stories when it appears the offending parties are “progressives.” Ed Kelley probably didn’t sleep last night, quivering with excitement about those anti-Terrill editorials he gets to write. We’re thinking that this story may trump that sensational follow-up story about Dirty Harry Coates insinuating a phony computer hack job to cover-up his losing those documents last session, but we digress.

Rep. Terrill has cultivated many enemies in his HB 1804 effort. The drive-by Oklahoma City media, the same bunch that has looked past worst transgressions by the likes of Mike Turpen and Coates, is reporting the bankruptcy story with manifest glee. The Associated Press is jacked up enough to actually file two stories. Major television stations are reading the AP wire copy, but Terrill quotes are few and far between.

Here’s what we know thus far: the bumbling anti-1804 cartel that Terrill thwarted this past legislative session is NOT responsible for this last-minute bankruptcy ‘revelation.’ Multiple sources tell OKPNS that a group of immigration lawyers have been hustling the information like cheap porn in a plain brown wrapper, complete with ’spin’ regarding some so-called ‘irregularities’ in the filing. Terrill has denied any wrongdoing, but reports are the trustee in the bankruptcy case felt pressure, and now he’s logging more press time than Brent Rinehart.

Bankruptcy filings are not hard to discover, but the capitol press corps and the anti-1804 cartel headed by the incompetent Coates couldn’t and didn’t do it. The Terrill story has been prepared by a group of immigration lawyers, hell bent on overturning the law. They believe a last minute smear of Terrill will further that goal, and they’ve done the dirty work for the press and even prepared for them a story line, all without going on the record, and with incredibly suspicious timing. You know, just like they teach you in journalism school!

The bankruptcy is a legitimate item for public discussion, but the timing and the pre-fabricated story line smells like a last-minute campaign hatchet job. That hasn’t stopped the Oklahoma City press from swallowing the stink bait hook, line and sinker. We readily agree that the story about a high-profile public official deserves to be heard, but the hustlers of this information purposefully waited until the last minute to bring this to the attention of the public in a manner befitting an old Soviet Union spy, but the Oklahoma City press was ready to buy anything that harms Terrill. Caution, be damned!

Because of the suspicious-to-all-but-the-press timing, some restraint and care should have been exercised, but that wouldn’t fit into the press agenda, now would it? Somewhere Edward R. Murrow is rolling over in his grave!

We’ll be watching for the next set of stories the immigration lawyers, er, rather the press writes in the next few days.

DEVELOPING……

W.A.D. Edmondson & His Conflicts of Interest

From pointoflaw.com:

“This spring sixteen state attorneys general filed an amicus brief with the Rhode Island Supreme Court in support of the state’s public nuisance suit against former lead paint manufacturers, a dubious cause if there ever were one. The roster of signers includes quite a few AGs whose closeness to trial-lawyer interests has caused us unease in the past, including Drew Edmondson (Oklahoma)….”

OKPNS FLASHBACK 7/10/07

A Deal for the Public: If You Win, You Lose

Adam Liptak, the national legal correspondent of The New York Times, writes the “Sidebar” column for the newspaper. The column covers and considers developments in the law. Liptak weighs in on Drew Edmondson and the “poultrygate” scandal the Oklahoma press refuses to cover.
When Oklahoma’s attorney general decided to sue about a dozen poultry companies, saying they had polluted the state’s waterways with chicken manure, he did not turn to lawyers on his staff or hire an outside law firm that would bill in the usual way, by the hour.

Instead, Attorney General W. A. Drew Edmondson went into business with three plaintiffs’ firms, agreeing to pay them as much as half of any money they recovered from the poultry companies. Read more…

EXCLUSIVE: Candid Emails Reveal Depths of 1804 Repeal Conspiracy; Ambush Planned for Rep. Terrill

“Flashpoint will be having Randy Terrill and Harry Coates on this Sunday. If anyone wants to give Mike some fodder, please send to me.” Susan Turpen

“In fact I think we should get together with Harry [Sen. Coates] if he has time and discuss not even really getting into a debate with Randy but merely pointing to the need to move more cautiously.

“I suppose lastly I might ask him [Terrill] about his family tree”

Tom Price Jr. – Sr. VP Chesapeake Energy Corporation

“Am I crazy, it is 10:30 and I have had lots of wine but I really like this argument!” Otie Ann Fried – Fried Kilpatrick Guinn Consulting

Click here to read entire emails.

What does the bumbling senate architect of the sagging HB 1804 repeal effort, an arrogant and insulting flunky to the Chesapeake CEO and his tipsy lobbyist, the wife of a goofy fat lawyer/co-host of a fading television political talk show who has sponged millions of dollars in legal fees because of his ties to Attorney General Drew Edmondson have in common?

They and many more capitol regulars are exposed as major conspirators in a clumsy, dishonest and incompetent conspiracy to repeal Oklahoma’s landmark 2007 immigration reform bill, HB 1804.

In part 1 today, the Oklahoma Political News Service reveals a coordinated effort by the plotters to stack the March 30th Flashpoint program, which hosted guests Randy Terrill, HB 1804 author, and Sen. Harry Coates, chief opponent of HB 1804.

Shockingly, a review of the program indicates that Turpen did not declare at any point in the program that he works for Chesapeake, a glaring conflict-of-interest that viewers are entitled to know under any journalistic standard. “If KFOR management knew but chose not inform their viewers, this revelation will kill the program,” one media observer tells OKPNS. “But if Turpen withheld the information, he’s got to be removed immediately if there is any hope of salvaging the program’s reputation.”

The station’s management has not returned OKPNS calls regarding this explosive revelation, but OKPNS is told that it is common knowledge that Turpen works for Chesapeake.

To his credit, the other Flashpoint panelist, Oklahoma City businessman and former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphries did declare his ties to repeal efforts by virtue of his leadership positions in the city chamber of commerce.

A review of the program reveals Turpen continually engaging Terrill with questions our documents reveal to be concocted from the repeal group, which appears to be headed by Chesapeake employee Tom Price. Price, who observers tell OKPNS group is arrogant and rude but has been unmasked this session as none too bright when it comes to political strategy, at one point insultingly writes that Terrill’s “family tree” ought to be subject of questions. “The man is basically all hat, no cowboy, and his screw-up’s are really hurting Chesapeake’s reputation,” a capitol insider recently told OKPNS a few days ago before these damaging revelations.

Ironically, Terrill is a regular panelist on News9’s Thursday Your Vote Counts program, which has far more viewers than Flashpoint. Time after time the anti-1804 panelists tried to trip up Terrill with trick questions, only to be frustrated. Turpen in particular appears to be very frustrated, particularly when Terrill turned the tables ands asked the rotund lawyer questions he was unable to answer.

The documents reveal late night e-mail exchanges between another Chesapeake lobbyist Otie Ann Fried, who suggests a strategy to Price and then says “Am I crazy, it’s 10:30 (PM) and I’ve had lots of wine…” Price apparently agreed with the wine and exhaustion strategy as Turpen and Sen. Coates utilized the advice on the March 30th Flashpoint.

Other delicious nuggets gleaned from the documents include Turpen’s wife Susan interjecting herself in the process, imploring the group to send her questions that she will pass along to Turpen, who apparently cannot think of questions on his own.

The documents reveal other players in the loop include a former partner in Congressman Tom Cole’s old consulting firm, Deby Snodgrass, now another Chesapeake employee, lobbyist Pat Hall, Patricia Fennell, executive director of the Latino Community Development Agency, a private non-profit organization in Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs President Hopper Smith, a former legislator. The Fried e-mail does not indicate whether or not Smith favors immigration reform repeal, but the documents suggest he was at a meeting with Fried and told a story of his days in the legislature which was apparently the inspiration for the late night wine-filled brain storm that she passed on to Price.

The document also reveals that the group is resigned to abandoning engagement with Terrill, which they have avoided for over a year. When reminded of that on Flashpoint on March 30th, Turpen, frantically, almost spastically interrupts repeatedly that “they will’ at some point actually talk to Terrill about the issue, which is clearly contradicted by the obtained documents.

Some strategy not actually fueled by booze does creep into the discussions, which clearly proves our post from April 3rd is correct: that the repeal effort has been quietly dropped, and instead the group is instead attempting to delay implementation instead.

Illinois River Advocate Supports W.A.D. Edmondson Poultry Suit

Courtesy of Conium

We’re often accused here at the Oklahoma Political News Service of being one sided in our coverage of Oklahoma’s political news. Believe it or not, even “Scrooge” Edmondson has garnered sympathy from our readers’ because of our sometimes unflattering coverage of him. This excerpt from the Muskogee Phoenix should pacify our critics for a bit. This one’s for you W.A.D.!

The Poultry Community Council
and the poultry companies no doubt appreciate Rick Stubblefield’s “insight” (Dec. 7) as he is a vocal supporter of the poultry industry and denigrates the efforts of Oklahoma’s Attorney General Drew Edmondson to protect our environment.
Both Stubblefield and Jackie Cunningham, director of community relations Poultry Community Council, conveniently overlook the fact that the only real progress and efforts made by the poultry industry to work on correcting the damage to the Illinois River watershed occurred after the lawsuit was filed by Edmondson. Edmondson Trying to Intimidate OKPNS?

In the post below, we excerpted and linked to an Arkansas newspaper article that detailed Drew Edmondson using fake FBI agents to serve a summons to a local chicken farmer. Later, we received this email from the editor of the paper. We’re taking bets that someone from the AG’s office contacted this editor and told her we were using their “copyrighted” material. Iran’s president Ahmadinejab would be proud Drew!

AG Edmondson Using Henchman to Intimidate Chicken Farmers?

Courtesy of Conium

Does Drew Edmondson think that the law applies to everyone else but him? It’s bad enough that he is persecuting honest citizens for excercising their constitutional rights, now he is using bullying tactics to persecute a chicken farmer in Northeast Oklahoma. We’ve personally talked with Bev Saunders on the telephone. The stories she told us of Edmondson’s harrassment would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Incredible and unbelievable!

BY ROBERT J. SMITH

Two men wearing FBI windbreakers arrived last week at Gentry City Hall looking for Bev Saunders. They never said they were federal agents, but they didn’t say they weren’t, either.

Tulsa police Maj. Rod Hummel and the other man wanted to give a subpoena to Saunders, who works at the Gentry Chamber of Commerce and is manager of Poultry Partners, an organization of poultry farmers in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. The jackets were a bullying tactic meant to convince her that the men were federal agents, Saunders said. A former FBI agent said Thursday she’s probably right about their intentions.

“As a citizen, if they are wearing a jacket with FBI, I would be assuming they represent that agency,” said U. S. Marshal Dick O’Connell, who spent 30 years as an FBI agent. “In my opinion, those officers, although they didn’t say they represented a federal agency, probably gave the impression that they did represent a federal agency.” Hummel didn’t return telephone calls seeking comment.

Saunders wasn’t in the chamber of commerce’s office at Gentry City Hall when Hummel and the other man arrived Oct. 22 wearing jackets with FBI logos on the left shoulders. She was off work when they returned Oct. 24, but she came to meet them. When Saunders asked for identification, Hummel showed his Oklahoma driver’s license. He never said he was with the FBI, she said. She never spoke to the second man, who stayed outside.

“They didn’t lie,” she said. “They were just leaving the impression.” The subpoena is related to the federal lawsuit filed by Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson in 2005 against eight poultry companies with operations in Arkansas. Read more…

Smell of Okla. AG Edmondson’s Stale Big Chicken Suit Will Linger Beyond 2008 Elections

Courtesy of Conium

By Rob Luke

Edmondson is so intent on wringing a multi-million dollar ruling for the state and its lawyers against the country’s biggest chicken producers that he’s passing up a winnable shot at the U.S. Senate, we report today.

Good news for the lawyers who could reap a bonanza if Edmondson’s suit against 14 major chicken producers succeeds, we’ve already noted. Bad news for Oklahoma business.

The attorney general started pursuing Arkansas-based Big Chicken-owned producers six years ago. Now, after key legal victories, he no doubt smells blood. Higher office can wait – Big Chicken, charged with polluting popular waterways in Oklahoma’s northeast, looks ripe for the final kill, he appears to have decided.

The suit’s biggest winners so far are the lawyers Edmondson hired on a contingency basis to represent the state against Big Chicken. Miller & Keffer; Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen, Orbison & Lewis; and Motley Rice now stand to collect up to one-third of any financial award the state wins in the suit after a recent ruling. Read more…

Burns Hargis to Oklahoma State University Is a "Done Deal"

Sources tell OKPNS that Burns Hargis to Oklahoma State University is a done deal. The sources say mega-bucks OSU Godfather T. Boone Pickens has signed off on the deal and Hargis will indeed become OSU’s next President as soon as he is eligible. The former regent must wait for a period of one year before he is technically eligible to be the president.

So what happens to KFOR’s Flashpoint program? Hargis has been the rock on which the program was built, always having to pull fat pant-load Mike Turpin along. Hargis is always entertaining, but Turpin is one of the most disliked television personalities in Oklahoma history. While the show could easily withstand Turpin’s exit, it will be much harder to find an entertaining replacement for Hargis: there are no good television-ready Republican replacements currently living in Oklahoma.

The program failed in Tulsa, and the cheap New York Times company, which has put KFOR up for sale, has been losing money on the show for years. It’s not even the most watched political show in Oklahoma: KWTV’s “Your Vote Counts” segment, which is faster and more entertaining, draws twice as many viewers. So enjoy the current format: whether or not KFOR tries to save the show or not, it’s curtains for either entertainment or Flashpoint altogether.
