Quote of the Day: Boren: “If We Have a Tight Majority One Way or Another, That Puts Me in the Driver’s Seat”

Can someone please tell the Congressman there’s no “I” in team!

Tulsa world:

While such a statement falls in the category of conventional wisdom that historically has the party in power losing congressional seats in mid-term elections, Boren parts company with others within his own party by suggesting such a setback would be a “good thing for Oklahoma and for me.”

“If we have a tight majority one way or another, that puts me in the driver’s seat,” the three-term lawmaker said.

“In the 112th (Congress), I probably will have the most influence I have ever had, no matter who has the majority.” Read more…

One thing you forgot sir. You still have to win re-election in November!

Okie Pundit: Non-Race of the Day: Mary Fallin vs. Randy Brogdon

Okie Pundit dissects the Fallin/Brogdon race for the Republican nomination for governor. News 9’s Scott Mitchell gives his analysis of the overall race for governor.

After receiving positive feedback for our last examination of a race that was over before it began, we’re placing the spotlight on another primary destined to end up heavily lopsided.

Congresswoman Mary Fallin vs. State Senator Randy Brogdon for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Fallin is serving her second term as the Congressional Representative for Oklahoma’s 5th District, prior to which she served three terms as Lieutenant Governor. Brogdon has represented the Owasso area in the State Senate since 2002.

As always, money is a very important factor in a campaign, especially on a statewide level. A successful candidate must be able to purchase enough media points to generate name identification, win supporters, and motivate them to vote. Here are the rounded fundraising figures through the last filing period in October. Read more…

The Effect of Term Limits on the Legislature

By Rep. Jason Murphey

I find it helpful to use the occasion of the new legislative session to think back about my experiences and observations over the last three years and apply the knowledge picked up from this review to strategize how to conduct my efforts during the next year.

Perhaps you have encountered someone of the belief that in order to win approval for legislation, an elected official must play a political game in which he compromises his principles.

I can distinctly recall the comments of those who asserted it would be nearly impossible to pass legislation because politicians would be alienated with stances such as my pledge to sponsor a bill to reduce legislative pay, refusing lobbyists gifts and contributions, massively reducing government spending and voting against all new debt spending.

However, with the support of a large number of reform-minded legislators, I have been blessed to win approval for a number of legislative initiatives codifying a modernization agenda designed to reduce the size of state government while making it more transparent and accessible to citizens. This was done while still refusing to compromise on these principles. Read more…

The Henry-Meacham Stealth Tax Increase?

Reports have been filtering in to OKPNS that several motorists have had to dig a little deeper into their pockets when it came time to pay their tolls. A husband and wife team emailed us horror stories of having to plop down an extra 50 -75 cents (on several occasions) because the machines didn’t register their quarters. Is this a stealth tax perpetrated by Governor Henry and state treasurer Scott meacham? If you have a particular story or have video of an encounter between you and an uncooperative machine, please send to okpns_editor@hotmail.com.

Phantom OK ZIP gets $11.9 Million Stimulus

We have terrorists boarding airplanes with explosives in their underwear, and now we learn that more stimulus money is going to non existent areas. And these people want to run our healthcare?

OKLAHOMA CITY – A non-existent ZIP code in Oklahoma received nearly $12 million in stimulus funds under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

According to Recovery.gov, 74443 received $11.9 million. But the United States Postal Service has no record of it.

It’s a problem nationwide. Earl Glynn, reporter for Kansas Watchdog in Overland Park, Kan., compiled more than $375 million in 170 ZIP codes that do not exist. This includes stimulus funds designed for grants, loans, and government contracts.

In Oklahoma, information compiled by Kansas Watchdog and by Bill McMorris at Watchdog.org show that a St. Louis, Mo.-based company, Hartman-Walsh Painting Company, received stimulus funds for “rehabilitation and painting gates (at) Fort Gibson Dam” east of Tahlequah on the Wagoner-Cherokee county line. It also notes that a dam in Kansas is to be painted as well.

The nearest community, Okay, Okla., has a ZIP code of 74446. The nearby town of Fort Gibson has a ZIP code of 74434.

The dam project has not proceeded because “bonds submitted, waiting for notice to proceed.” Read more…

Video: Total and Chesapeake Energy Make Deal

Great to see Chesapeake Energy and Aubrey McClendon getting back on their feet! Wonder if he’ll pay back some of the $112 million dollars he made in 2008 – which included a $75 million dollar bonus? 2008 was so bad for Mr. McClendon and Chesapeake, that he even had to sell his prized wine collection!

“The Ultimate Hypocrisy?” Democratic Powerbroker Whitten Responds to OKGOP Chairman’s Lawsuit

From Examiner.com:
By: Reggie Whitten
President, Oklahoma Association for Justice

As you might have heard by now, Gary Jones, the Chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party, has filed a lawsuit in the District Court of Logan County against 12 different individuals and entities alleging a number of causes of action. Chairman Jones’ lawsuit stems from his failed 2002 and 2006 campaigns for the post of State Auditor. Even though he did not receive enough votes to win these elections (and it’s unclear whether he would have), Chairman Jones alleges these 12 defendants committed fraud and caused him damages, including mental anguish, emotional distress and punitive damages.

Some have called Chairman Jones’ lawsuit “frivolous.” The Oklahoman even editorialized that both the Chairman of the Republican Party and the Oklahoma courts have “better things to do.”

It seems to me somewhat ironic that the Oklahoman would throw stones at Chairman Jones for filing a lawsuit. The Oklahoma Publishing Company or “OPUBCO”, the entity which operates and distributes the Oklahoman, certainly has no problem seeking relief in the court system when it feels it has been wronged, which is precisely what Chairman Jones did.  Read more…
