A $42M Reminder Letter

Perhaps the IRS should also inform taxpayers of their share of the $9 trillion national debt, which as of today is more than $30,000 per American. Congress should be ashamed of itself for approving a ’stimulus’ bill that included funding for this wasteful mailing. The IRS should instead ask Congress for permission to use this funding to crack down on fraud and close the tax gap.

That’s U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), quoted in The Oklahoman, criticizing the IRS for spending $42,000,000 simply to notify taxpayers that in order to receive their $300-$600 tax rebates, they’ll need to file a 2007 tax return.

Did anyone think they didn’t need to file the 2007 tax return?
