Oklahoma Loses, Gains Major Employers in 2006

OKLAHOMA CITY — (AP) Oklahoma lost some major employers in 2006, but unemployment remained low and a number of new companies announced plans to come to the state.

Mass layoffs came with the closure of the General Motors Corp. assembly plant and Bridgestone/Firestone’s Dayton Tire factory.

The departure of Kerr-McGee Corp. following Anadarko’s $18 billion acquisition meant the relocation of about 200 jobs from downtown Oklahoma City to the Houston suburb of The Woodlands, Texas.

Also on the casualty list were an AOL call center in Oklahoma City, a Delta Faucet plant in Chickasha and Ethan Allen in Atoka. Eaton Corp. in Vinita laid off 190 people, while the lure of Mexico and its lower-cost labor continued to cause job losses at Unit Parts Co. in Oklahoma City and Edmond. Read more…
